Other Helpful Tips from the Alpharetta Dumpster Man

Placement of Dumpsters

Observe the area where the dumpster will be placed.  Ensure that there are no branches or overhanging wires where you intend on having the dumpster placed.  The dumpster is lifted about 30 feet into the air, then rolled off into your driveway. Keep in mind that roll off companies are not liable for any possible driveway damage, or surrounding damage such as overhead wires.

The vehicle delivering the dumpster is a semi, which will be driving across your parking lot or driveway.  There is a potential that it may cause cracks or other damage to your pavement, so be sure it is sufficiently paved to withstand the weight of the truck and any equipment such as the dumpster itself.

In some cases, a dumpster cannot be placed anywhere else but a public right-of-way. This involves getting a permit or written permission from the city of Alpharetta.  If a permit is not received but is required, there may be tickets and fees issued by the city or state for which the customer is responsible to pay.  Please, feel free to speak to one of our representatives, or the city of Alpharetta if you have any additional questions concerning these permits.

Materials

Next, what materials are you planning on disposing in the dumpster?  Large amounts of heavy materials typically cannot go in larger sized containers.  This is due to many factors – from Alpharetta legal road weight limits, to safety concerns, to simply being able to pick the dumpster back up again after you fill it. Note that in the waste business, when we say “yards” we are referring to cubic yards.

When to Order your Dumpster

While prompt dumpster service is where we excel, we are no different than anybody else in the sense of needing notice.  Most of our customers allow us a one to two business day notice for their dumpster deliveries. There is no limit on how far in advance you can reserve a dumpster.  As with anything, the more notice that we receive the better we can service you.

Loading your Dumpster

All dumpsters will be equipped with a hinged door that can be swung open.  This allows for a customer to walk all the way into the dumpster or wheel materials directly into the dumpster.  When loading your dumpster, it is very important to make sure all materials are completely level with the top of the dumpster.

Drivers must place a tarp over the top of the dumpster to comply with Alpharetta safety and legal requirements.  These tarps prevent materials from falling out onto your property or on streets and highways.  If materials are over the top of the dumpster, drivers will not remove the dumpster from the property which will incur unwanted fees and complications.  This is something that we all want to avoid.  It is often cheaper to rent two dumpsters than to try and fit everything into one dumpster and risk extra fees, wasted time, or delays to your project.

Larger Sized Dumpsters

Let’s talk about large roll off dumpsters, especially 40 cubic yard containers. These disposal units are massive and sometimes ordered mistakenly. These dumpsters were meant more for permanent facilities, such as warehouses that need to keep dumpsters on site for an indefinite amount of time.  Yes, you can save money upfront by going “huge”, but what happens when they are filled with concrete and unable for our truck to lift it?

Dumpster companies use the term “dry run” or “hauling fee” fee when a driver is not able to swap, deliver, or remove a dumpster so being aware of what materials are going into the dumpster and how much of this material is being disposed of is extremely important.  The 40 yard dumpsters are most likely to be the heaviest due to its size.  There is an increased risk of weight issues with 40 yard dumpsters.  We are not discouraging you from ordering a 40 yard dumpster but be sure that it is the correct sized dumpster for your job.

Acceptable Materials in Dumpsters

In general, most trash is classed as MSW, which stands for Municipal Solid Waste.  This is your general trash material, whether it is bags of trash left in a basement, or miscellaneous items in your garage.

However, a lot of roll off dumpster customers use their containers for C&D materials (that stands for construction and demolition).  Remodel jobs, roofing and other building related projects often generate this type of debris.

Unless special arrangements are made with your roll off provider, a general rule of thumb is to keep the following materials out of dumpsters.

  • Refrigerators and freezers must have the doors removed and freon extracted by a licensed heating and cooling professional who will often put a special sticker on the appliance indicating them as safe to dispose of at the landfill
  • Compostable materials such as leaves, grass, and branches are accepted but must be in a separate dumpster
  • Oversized tree trunks (stumps especially) can also be a safety hazard if the stumps are not cut down to firewood size logs. A large stump can shift around in a roll off container, and if that happens while the truck is taking a corner, it could potentially cause the truck to roll over.  Large stumps also often incur dig-out fees which customers end up being liable for at the disposal site because they get wedged in the dumpster, requiring them to be dug out.  Again, keep those firewood log sized.
  • Liquids (such as paint, pesticides or other flammables)

Be sure to ask your Alpharetta Dumpster Man representative if you are unsure if the materials you are disposing of are acceptable to put into your dumpster.  Call us at 888-WASTE-90 (888-927-8390), fill out our online dumpster rental quote form, or email us at Info@CallDumpsterMan.com
